Mercedes electric GLC arrives to replace EQC with new design and fast charging (Mercedes-Benz Media Newsroom USA)
Mercedes is integrating its electric and combustion vehicles, gradually phasing out the “EQ” lineup. The new GLC with EQ Technology will replace the EQC, discontinued in 2023, and will be offered in the United States.
Developed from the ground up as a fully electric SUV, it will feature rear-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive variants, with a system capable of disconnecting the front axle to improve efficiency. Its rear motor, designed in-house, features a two-speed transmission and silicon carbide inverters. The new 800V architecture enables charging above 320 kW, a significant improvement over the older EQC.
The model will also feature a standard heat pump, optimizing energy consumption by utilizing residual heat from the battery and electric motor to warm the interior. Additionally, the battery cells will use anodes mixed with silicon oxide for higher energy density.
The electric GLC will also introduce a new integrated braking system and support for regenerative braking to improve range. Mercedes aims for a design closer to combustion models, moving away from the rounded shapes characteristic of the EQ line.
This launch is part of the brand’s strategy to introduce 17 electric and 19 combustion models by 2027. In addition to the electric GLC, electric sedans based on the C-Class and E-Class are under development, as well as a possible electric version of the G-Class. Mercedes thus intends to expand its electric lineup without losing the visual identity of its traditional models.
